    • The spanish controlled trade and used it to benefit Spains economy
    • Colonies were completely controlled by spain -All the wealth and money was kept only in Spain, not in colonies
    • Only Peninsulares could hold important jobs

    • Haiti saw the time was right to rebel
    • Because of France's turmoil in its country, Haiti's people took over and made it a free country.
    • This set an example to the rest of Latin America and started a huge movement for freedom

    • Brazil was the biggest colony in Latin America
    • Was ruled my portugal
    • Because Brazil was so large its freedom gave a huge help to the other countries fighting for freedom

    • Three years when most of Latin America Revolutions got their independence
    • Simon Bolivar did most of his work during this time as he helped these countries get their freedom
    • The countries that gained freedom during the times were: Mexico, Grand Colombia, Peru, Brazil, and Chile

    • After Chile and Vendezuela won their revolutions, political reform was in order -Throughout Latin America constitutionalism was popular
    • they created and rejected a total of nine constitutions each
    • Reestablishing the governments after a revolution was a difficult and long progress

    • Plantations were everywhere in Brazil and despite abolitionists and slave rebels fighting since 1850s
    • Slavery wasn't abolished by the Brazilian parliament until 1888

    • The powerful Juan Manual de Rosas was overthrown by an alliance of foreign and domestic enemies
    • Rosas ran Argentina very cruelly and after he was overthrown a period a civil war was developed as Argentina was trying to works its self out
    • Eventually in 1861, they developed a strong central government

    1880 (Immigration Boom)

    • Immigration sparked rapid economic growth, urbanization and population boom -This increase in immigrants not only had economic benefits but also stirred racial hostitilities between the different ethnicities

    1900 (Latin America)

    • Latin America's nations had grown substantially grown stronger and could better defend their independence against foreign intervention -Slavery was abolished at this point and immigration increase led to economic growth, changed cultures and racial opinions
    • At this time women still didnt have as many rights as men and weaker countries were left behind as South America was divided into a rich north and poorer south
