    Beginning Of Journey
    On this day, WIlliam Clark, Meriwether Lewis, and about four dozen men set saill from St. Louis on an expedition that they have been planning for months. The name of their journey was, "The Corps of Discovery". For security purposes, they always had a guard on watch our for Indians or other threats. It took them about 2 months to go 600 miles along the river.

    Heading Into Danger?
    Everything was going fine, until Lewis and Clark came into an encounter with the Sioux tribe. Jefferson warned the two about this tribe and their power and how they must make a good impression on them. When they came along the Yankton Sioux, the tribe was a very peaceful but disappointed by their gifts. They were warned to be prepared for the reactions of the Tetan Sioux, who werent as peaceful.
  • Approaching Winter

    Approaching Winter
    The group of men knew that Winter was approaching so they planned to stay at the Mandan tribe's village. They finished their fort within a month, but began to worry when their food started to dwindle down. They knew that had to find a new source of food quickly.
  • Into Grizzly Country

    Into Grizzly Country
    After the Winter with the Mandans, they were finally on the right track(due west). They were warned about the creatures they will see on the way, such as the grizzlies. The men weren't too phased by the idea of these animals until they encountered a group of them and were attacked by one.
  • Among the Shoshone

    Among the Shoshone
    Considering they needed horses, they decided to go to the Shoshone tribe for help. They were lead to the chief of the tribe, where Sacagawea translated and helped communicate. After negotiating, they got the horses and were informed on trails that they can take to help them get to their destination faster.
  • Deathly Crossing

    Deathly Crossing
    Snow was beginning to fall and their endurance was being tested. The horses were very close to starvation and some of the men have had to eaten some of the horses because of the scarcity of their food. They had to go to a Native tribe and trade for fish and roots. WHen the snow started o slow down, they were back on track to their goal.

    "Ocian in View!"
    After almost a year and a half of traveling, Lewis and Clark thought they finally reached the Pacific ocean. Instead they were 20 miles from the coast. After three more weeks, they reached the shore and decided to spend the winter on the coast.
  • Readying for the Return

    Readying for the Return
    All of the men were ready to go home but they had to time their departure perfectly. They had to wait for the snow to melt but could'nt wait too long because the river might freeze. When MArch came, they packed up their stuff and began their journey home.
  • Given Up for Dead, Hailed as Heroes

    Given Up for Dead, Hailed as Heroes
    When they returned, it shocked the people of St. Louis because they were thought to be dead. Since they were not dead, they were praised because of their heroic actions over the course of about two years.
