    Expedition Starts at St. Louis, Missouri
    The Corps of Discovery set off from Camp Dubois near what is now Hartford, Illinois to begin their journey to the West. There were thirty-three people in the Corps of Discovery at the time. They joined Meriwether Lewis near present day St. Louis, Missouri and continued on west.
  • Sergeant Charles Floyd Dies

    Sergeant Charles Floyd Dies
    Sergeant Charles Floyd became the first and only casualty of the Corps of Discovery. This tragety happened near current day Sioux City, Iowa. The site where he is burried is called Floyd's Bluff.
  • The Teton Sioux Tribe

    The Teton Sioux Tribe
    The Teton Sioux Indians almost started a fight with the expedition. They would not let the expedition pass through their river without giving them a boat. Black Buffalo, the chief of the Teton Sioux Tribe, broke up the scuffle.

    The Corps of Discovery built Fort Mandan so they could have a place to stay during the winter. It was located near Bismarck, North Dakota. They built their fort near the Mandan Indian's village.

    Sacagawea Gives Birth to Son
    Sacagawea gave birth to her son, Jean Baptiste, during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Meriwether Lewis helped her during her delivery. Her son was the first child born in the Corps of Discovery.

    Explorers Hunt Buffalo and Encounter Grizzly Bears
    The expedition hunted buffalo and ate about nine pounds of meat a day. Thet also encountered a grizzly bear. They ended up killing it; but when they encountered more of them, they showed more respect to the animal.

    Shoshone Tribe and Camp Fortunate
    The Corps of Discovery discovered a Shoshone Tribe of Indians. Meriwether Lewis started bargaining with them. Sacagawea then discovered that her brother is the tribe's chief when she was translating for the expedition. They were very fortunate to find this tribe of Shoshone Indians that they named the site Camp Fortunate.

    Nez Perce Indians Befriend the Group: Illness Strikes
    The Corps of Discovery encountered the Nez Perce Indians. The tribe did not know if they should befriend the men or if they should be enemies with them. A woman of the tribe named Watkuweis urged them to befriend the white men. They taught the group how to make canoes. Later, the men from the Corps of Discovery became sick from eating large portions of salmon and cama roots.

    The Corps of Discovery traveled through the Clearwater River. The spot where they started canoeing is in Orofino, Idaho.

    Expedition Votes for Place to Spend the Winter
    The winter of 1805 made the leaders of the Corps of Discovey have the group vote on where they should spend the winter. They decided to build a place to stay south of the Columbia River. The location they chose is close to Astoria, Oregon.

    The Corps of Discovery built Fort Clatsop as a place to spend the winter. They celebrated Christmas in this fort. It was the last fort built by the expedition before returning back to the East.

    The expedition had run out Whiskey. They now ran out of tobacco.The men found an alternative to tobacco in crab tree bark.

    Two Blackfeet Indian Warriors Killed Trying to Steal Expedition's Goods

    On July 26, the expedition sighted eight Blackfeet Indian warriors campimg nearby. The next day the Indians are caught trying to steal the expedtiton's weapons. The expedition tried to take back their weapons and ended up killing two Blackfeet Indians. This was the only killing that occurred during the entire expedition.

    Corps of Discovey Returns Home
    The Corps of Discovery returned home to St. Louis, Missouri. It was their first time back East in about two and a half years.
