    Birth of Muhammad
    Muhammad was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. His father, Abd Allah bin Al-Muttalib, died before he was born and he was raised by his mother, Amina bint Wahb. In keeping with Mecca tradition, Muhammad's mother entrusted him to a wet nurse named Halima.

    Muhammad Orphaned
    Muhammad's father died before he was born. On a trip to visit his father's grave, his mother fell ill and died. He was only five when his mother died and Halima took him back to Mecca and placed him in the care of his grandfather.

    Muhammad recieves his first vision
    Muhammad was disturbed by Mecca's new materialism and traditional idolatry. He soon began to make long trips of retreat into the mountain cave outside of town where he fasted and meditated. Muhammad told about an encouter with the angel Gabriel who gave him a new doctrine to be the messenger of God.

    Muhammad takes his message to the public
    Muhammad finally decided to take all of his expeiriences and reveal his message. It was then that he started to collect verses for the Qur'an. This book would become of the sacred text of Islam. Many disagreed with Muhammad's teachings and banned trade with his people. The leaders of the tribe also tried to assasinate Muhammad.

    Emigration of the Muslims
    Due to the persecution, Muhammad and a few hundred of his followers migrated to Yathrib. The leaders were tired of the civil war and invited Muhammad to try and instill a spirit of peace and civility. This town soon was renamed to Medina ("City of thr Prophet").

    Beginning of the Military Period
    The Mecca leaders were angered by Muhammad's new success and their anger led to three major battles. The first was the Battle of Badr in 624 which the Muslims won. The second was the Battle of Uhud in 625, and the Muslims lost this one. The third and final was the Battle of the Trench and the Siege of Medina, which was a stalemate. In 628 a treaty was signed to cease the combat and allow freedom of travel for the Muslims.

    Muhammad moved back to Medina to live the rest of his life. In 632, his final year of life, he traveled to Mecca to complete his pilgrimage.

    Muhammad was buried in the mosque in Medina. Within a hundred years of his death, Islam spread throughout the continent and to the remote corners of Arabia and China. His teachings traveled as far as France and Spain.

    Three short years after becoming and orphan, Muhammad's granfdfather passed away. He then whent ot live with his uncle. Due to his uncle small financial means, Muhammasd served as a shepherd. He also traveled with his uncle who was a merchant and learned the trade.

    When Muhammad was in his early twenties, he entered into the service of a wealthy widowed merchant named Khadja. bint Khawalayd. Muhammad and Khadja were distant cousins interestingly enough. Muhammad was her traveling salesman. He traveled and sold the goods and came ack with the profit.

    Khadja was impressed with Muhammad's honesty and character, so she proposed to him. Muhammad was 25 and Khadja was almost 40. Together they had 6 children. Their two boys died in infancy but their 4 daughters lived.
