Shirley went to Saint Petersburg Junior college, where her freshman year they started unsegregating the school systems. She said, "It was very different to be in class with people of color, everyone was adjusting and it was hard." -

Shirley said during the interview, "People started watching fils together in the neighborhood, you would go to a friends house and there would be 20-30 people crowded around the TV to watch the videotape." -
