Literacy Timeline

  • Good Night Moon

    Good Night Moon
My earliest reading memories involve my parents reading to me before bed. One book that I remember most is Goodnight Moon. It was the perfect book to be read to as a child because it made you happy to go to sleep. I can still picture my moms voice reading this book. The main focus of the book was saying goonight to all the things you are around during the day. This book has many simple words that I learned how to read and say because of reading this book so many times.
  • "Hooray for reading your first book"

"Hooray for reading your first book"
My Kindergarten teacher Miss Embencamp had a library filled with her favorite collection of picture books. We often had free time in the classroom to play. One day I picked up a book and read it cover to cover with no help from my teacher. My teacher was so proud that she wrote me a certificate that read: "Rachel picked up a book today and read it all by herself-Hooray!"

    Spelling Tests

Starting in first grade all the way through eigth grade, my teacehrs would create our weekly spelling lists. Im sure this is an event that many students are familiar with no matter what school they came from. Spelling pretests were given on Mondays and included a collection of new words. We would spend a week doing different activities, and games that helped us practice a particular list of words. Friday was our actual test and by then were to have mastered the new words.

    Summer Reading fun

One of my favorite memories growing up was the summer reading program at my local library. Throughout the summer I was responsible for logging all my reading and then going to the library and talking about what I read. Throughout the summer you would reach certain milestones and in return the librararians would give you a reward for doing so great. I loved this program because not only did I get to read but also got prizes for doing so.
  • D.E.A.R

    D.E.A.R
D.E.A.R stood for Drop Everything and Read. This was one of my favorite events in elementary school because it was a time perioud of the day where we were supposed to forget about any daily stress and focus on one thing-reading. Every student loved D.E.A.R because they could read anything they wanted to. I remember loving it becuase I could read challenging books that took me a while to read and I could really focus on it.

    Trilogies

In 2012 I jumped on the Hunger Game bandwagon and read the first book. I soon read all three books right in a row and then later watched all the movies. Other popular trilogies like Divergent and Maze Runner have become so popular becasue of the futuristic aspect and the movies that come to follow them. I enjoy reading the books before seeing the movies because I like to imagine the book in my own perspective.
  • Creative Writing

    Creative Writing
Duriing my Senior year of high school I took a creative writing class. I loved this class because it allowed for me to truly express my writing and everything I had learned over the years and finally to be creative and not folllow a strict prompt. One of my favorite writing projects in that class was a "Diary of a Senior" project. I wrote a diary like book explaining the every day struggles of a senior in high school. The writing projects in the class will be something Ill remember forever.
  • KINDLE

    KINDLE
Technology has been a huge part of my life as a student for as long as I can remember. I have been able to experience paper books slowly being transferrred into being an ebook. A couple of christmases ago I got a KINDLE. I love using my KINDLE because I can read and buy a book anywhere I want. I believe that kindles and other reading devices truly demonstrate how technology and literacy have come together.
