Lord of the Flies - Chapter 1

  • The beginning

A fair-haired boy and a boy a boy who is short and fat were moving through a jungle. They and some other children have been in a plane crashed and may be stranded on an island without any adults. From there conversation we learn that the fair-haired boy was called Ralph while although the fat boy's real name was not revealed, was to be called Piggy, a nickname which he detest.
  • The first meeting

Piggy and Ralph found a conch and Piggy recalled that he had seen one before but is unable to blow it because of his asthma. Ralph did it instead and after several failed attempts he managed to make a trumpet-like sound which caught the attention off the other boys on the island. Some boys, including a group of choristers led by Jack appear on the beach. Even though they were exhausted, Jack demanded the boys to be in an orderly manner and dismisses any concerns towards Simon when he fainted
  • The election

The boys then discussed that they are on and island with no adults and that they must come up with plans to increase their chance of being rescued. An election was held and while the choirboys voted for Jack as leader, the majority voted for Ralph, mainly because of his looks, his size and that he gathered them using the conch. Ralph then decided Jack could still be the leader of the choir and was assigned to hunting duties.
  • The expedition

Ralph, Jack and Simon decided to go on an expedition to find out more about the island. Before the trip, Piggy confronted Ralph, asking why he revealed his nickname to everyone even though Ralph knew he didn't want to be called by that name. Ralph apologises and began the expedition. They reached the peak of the island, from where they could see no village smokes or boat, which suggests that they were on and unhabited island.
  • The pig

On the way back, the group found a pig, which Jack attempted to kill, but was unable to make himself do so and the pig escapes. He excused himself by saying that he was picking a spot to stab and vows to kill it the next time he finds it.
