Lucy went to the doctor
Her minor toothache turned into a massive pain in her jaw which was caused by a lump that had fluid in it and had to be drained. This was the first surgery she had. She was scheduled an emergency surgery. -
Lucy went to the dentist
She had a toothache that worsened steadily and was hit in the jaw with a kickball the day before. They found out she had a dental cyst which they removed in surgery. -
Lucy was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma
A third of her jaw was gone because of cancer. -
10th Birthday
In the hospital and tricked a nurse into giving her some Jell-O which was the first thing she had eaten in a week and felt better than she had in previous weeks which included getting weaker because she refused to drink all the water she needed to and talked very little ( she has one of those things that they put in your throat that you have to push to talk). -
Lucy went to a wig shop
A friend from her mom's work suggested wigs and her mom took her to a wig shop. She figured she would go try on some and then say she didn't like any of them and not get one. -

Chemotherapy
For 2 1/2 years Lucy got Chemotherapy. She would go everyday to get it and on Fridays she would go see the Dr. Woolf and get an IV in her and she hated that because it made her puke. -
Lucy starts loosing her hair
She goes to brush her hair in the morning and a clump of it comes out. -

Pony Parties
Part of her job was pony parties where you would go to someones party and everyone would get to ride a pony. -
6th grade
Boys would pick on her and call her ugly. -
Dental work
The chemotherapy damaged her teeth and she spent most of her 7th grade year in the hospital getting them fixed. -

In high school boys picked on her too and dared each other to date her or go say hi to your girlfriend and go give your girlfriend a kiss. -

The first surgery to fill in the right side of her jaw. -
Second reconstructive surgery
This one failed just like the first on had failed just months earlier. -
Lucy started college

On Friday and Saturday nights she would have to run the film in the theatre and would have to go up infront of the crowd and say "In accordance with the New York State fire marshal, there are exits located at either side of the theater." and everyone would cheer her name and interrupt her saying it. Everyone knew Lucy and her story and was considered the school mascot. -
Graduated from college

Her bone graft operation
A piece of bone would be taken from her hip and implanted into her jaw. -
Had a tissue expander
What they did was put a balloon in her jaw and and was blown up a little more everyday. The point of this was to make sure she had enough skin to cover the bone graft. -
Started at Fine Arts program at Iowa University

He was in prison for 27 years. -
Moved to Cambridge, MA
She took a fellowship at Radcliffe College -
Autobiography of a Face was published
This is the book she became famous from. This was also the first book she wrote. -

Lucy received a Whiting Writers Award
She recieved this because of her new literary talents. -

She died of a drug overdose of heroin. She got addicted to drugs because of all the medication she was put on.
