  • War Begins

    War Begins
    On August 4 1914 the First World War had begun. With Britain declaring war on Germany. Britain then became allies with France and Russia.
  • Machine Gun

    Machine Gun
    Most machine guns need 4-6 men to operate. They had the fire power of a 100 guns. They could fire 400-600 rounds a minute. The machiene gun was kmown to get jammed easy little because of hot conditons or unexperienced users.
  • The Flamethrower

    The Flamethrower
    The German forces were the ones to use the flamethrower. The Germans called it the Flammenwerfer which is flamethrower in German. Which used compressed air to launch gas and a battery to inginte the gas.
  • Lusitania sunked

    Lusitania sunked
    The ship Lusitania was on it way from New York to Liverpool. But on May 7 1915 near the coast of Ireland a German submarine fired a torpedo hit the ship and sinking it. About 1924 people died and 114 Americans. This lead the USA into the world war.
  • Zeppelin Attack

    Zeppelin Attack
    A German Zepplein was spotted above a town in London. Dropped bombs which injuried 35 people and killed 7 people. Only nine months ealier world war was non going.
  • The Tank

    The tank was first use d in the battle of Flers. It had a top speed of about 4 to 5 mph. It could cross a 8 foot gap. But mosty tank broke down and did not complete their objective. Only about a third were successful
  • Mustard Gas

    Mustard Gas
    Mustard gas first used by the Germans. Was fitted into artillery shells and grenades which was fired at enemy troops. Also referred as hot stuff or H.S. Injuring 1 million soldiers and civilains and causing death to 100,000 people.
  • With Family

    Harold at the begin of the war was not in it. On April 1917 he was still at home with his family in California. But wanted to do something so he join the air service to become a pilot
  • America joins

    America joins
    For a long time the USA had remain neutral. But on april 6 1917 they joined the world war. They had joined because of the sinking of the ship Lusitania which was sunked by a German submarine.
  • Sailing to Europe

    On June 20, 1917 Harold got on "The Chicago" which would sail at 10:00 to France. Where he meet his long time friend Alfred Bunnell.
  • Sworn into Air Corps

    Harold was released from the French army and sworn into the USA Air Corps as a cadet. This occurred on October 17, 1917
  • War Over

    War Over
    World War One was finally over the German forces had finally surrendered on November 11, 1918. On June 28, 1919 the Treaty of Versailles was signed by the allies. Which legally ended the war.
  • Trench Foot

    Trench Foot
    Trenches were cold, wet, and soldiers feet were on the cold and wet trench dig outs. Boots were provide but gum boots were given only to soldiers of higer exposure. To provent trench foot soldiers were to each others feet with grease to prevent trench foot
  • Free man

    On Saints Patrick day of 1919 Harold was finally was discharged and could go home. Went to New York and said " The war was a thing of the past and my experiences were a memory "
  • Package

    Harold had been a prisoner of war and his belongs had been shipped to his home in St. Cloud. He recalls finding all belongings except his Riding boots. Which still remain unfound.
