Macquarie island

  • The first sighting

    In 1810 Captain Fredrik Hasselborogh a Captain of a sealing ship the perseverance first sighted the island during a sealing trip to antarctic. The island was named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie
  • Sealers

    There was a shortage of food because the ships that brought food were not returning so the gangs had to start eating the wildlife. So now the gangs had to release rabbits, cats , mice etc.
  • Pests introduced

    Around the 1870s pests such as mice, rats, cats and rabbits were put into the wild to breed because this was a potential food source for the sealers.
  • Sealing Ban

    The Tasmanian Government made hunting seals illegal
  • Myxoma Virus

    A virus called the myxoma virus the virus was inside pellets and was dropped all over the island
  • Rabbit take over

    The remaining rabbits started to increase more and started to rip up vegetation and habitats of the native creatures to the island.
  • Bating succsecful

    The baiting plan has succeeded to kill the rats,mice,and most of the rabbits. To get rid of the rest of the rabbits a dog hunting campaign is underway.
  • Mawson returns

    Douglas Mawson went back to Macquarie island and commented on the rabbits as there were to many. He stopped the sealers from killing the seals an penguins and started to kill the rabbits.
