  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    Battle of Fort Sumter
    The unionists needed supplies at Fort Sumter so Lincoln sent supplies to them. The south got suspicious of it and started to attack, and eventually on April 14, 1861 Fort Sumter surrendered. It was significant because it was the first military action of the Civil War.
  • Merrimack Vs. Monitor

    Merrimack Vs. Monitor
    Ships needed more armor so the Merrimack got plated with old iron railroad rails. The effect of this was that it defeated most of the ships that were wooden. Then the Monitor showed up the next day and the battle happened between them eventually they had a draw. The battle between the two ships was significant because that was the first battle with what is called ironclads and the last time ever using wooden ships.

    The battle began on the morning of September 17, 1862 when the Union army, under General Joseph Hooker, attacked the Confederate army on the left flank. Antietam enabled the Union to repel the first Confederate invasion of the North. The battle allowed Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. The significance was that now with the Emancipation Proclamation slaves were free.

    Battle of Gettysburg
    Confederates were looking for supplies when they encountered a Union Cavalry on patrol. A battle breaks out between the sides and the Union claims victory because they had the high ground. It was significant because it meant that the south would never invade the north again.
