    Birth of the Buddha
    Lord Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, is born in Nepal. Buddhists believe that he reached enlightenment and so try to follow in his footsteps. Note: This event occured in B.C.E. but timetoast does not support B.C.E.

    Yakshamalla's reign begins

    Yakshamalla's reign begins
    Yakshamalla was king during the height of the Malla dynasty. He enlarged Nepal's boundaries and created infrastructure. He also constructed Bhaktapur's Royal Palace.

    The Malla Kingdom is divided

    The Malla Kingdom is divided
    After Yakshamalla's death, Nepal was divided into three kingdoms: Kathmandu, Bhadgaon, and Patan.

    Gorka Kingdom Established

    Gorka Kingdom Established
    The kingdom that would eventually unite Nepal was founded in 1559. Prithvi Narayan Shah, from an early age, worked to conquer the Kathmandu Valley, which he acheived in 1768. The Shah dynasty ruled until the Nepalese Civil War disposed the monarchy.
  • King Prithvi Narayan Shah's birth

    King Prithvi Narayan Shah's birth
    King Prithvi Narayan Shah was born in 1723 and died in 1775. He began the campaign for a united Nepal, after the Gorkha Kingdom had been divided when the Malla kings had split the kingdom. After he conquered Kirtipur, he ordered that all the men had their noses and lips cut off, and that the severed parts were brought to him. Once Nepal was unified, he maintained friendly but distant relations with the British, but died before he could organize the new united country.

    Disputed states claimed by both Nepal and the British East India company led to the Anglo- Nepalese War, in which Nepal suffered a terrible loss. The war ended in 1816 with the Treaty of Sugauli,
  • Rana Rule Established

    Rana Rule Established
    Jang Bahadur Rana took over the government as Prime Minister and established the hereditary Rana rule. They reduced the Shah kings to figureheads. The Ranas established a tyrannical goverment. They did not allow normal citizens to study and improve their station in life. Later in the dynasty, the Ranas started diplomatic relations with Britan and the USA. Their rule came to an end in 1951,

    King Tribhuvan Restored to the Throne
    King Tribhuvan, one of Nepal's favorite kings, was restored to the throne after a long parlimentary rule by the Ranas.
  • Nepali Civil War Begins

    Nepali Civil War Begins
    The Nepals Civil war was fought between Maoist rebels and government forces. It was started by the Communist Party of Nepal, trying to dispose the monarchy. The war ended in 2006 with the Comprehensive Peace Accord, which is monitored by the UN mission in Nepal.

  • Royal massacre

    Royal massacre
    Nine members of Nepal's monarchy were killed by Prince Dipendra, who then killed himself. Dipendra was drunk and fired a shot into the ceiling before killing nine people, including his mother and father. King Gyanendra ascended the throne after Dipendra died in a coma.
  • King assumes absolute power

    King assumes absolute power
    King Gyanendra, who became King after the 2001 massacre, stated that he "would not be a silent king" like his brother. He disbanded the government and declared himself "Chairman of the Council of Ministers." A state of emergency was declared.
  • First Nepalese Elections held

    First Nepalese Elections held
    Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda was elected Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Nepal and is sworn in on August 18.
