  • Franz Ferdinand killed

    Franz Ferdinand killed
    On June 23rd 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. Gavrilo Princep murdered him. This sparked World War 1.
  • Germany Invation

    Germany Invation
    On August3rd 1914 Germany invaded Belgium . Germany had to go through Belgium to get to France. This completed the Schlieffen plan.
  • Arnold Joined the Army

    Arnold Joined the Army
    On February 16th 1915 Arnold Stephen Hoke signed up with the Iowa national guard. He served on the Mexican border in 1916, 1917, he was bored by it. On August 20th 1917, he was honorably discharged so he could serve for the regular army.
  • Youngest Person to Serve

    Youngest Person to Serve
    The youngest person to serve was only 12. Sidney Lewis enlisted only 5 months after his 12th birthday. Many men faked their age at the time.
  • Battle of Verdun

    Battle of Verdun
    February 21st 1916, Battle of Verdun. The French held their line against the Germans until December. This was during the longest battle of the war.
  • High Suspicion in the US

    High Suspicion in the US
    In America, suspicion of the Germans was so high that German Shepherd dogs were killed. Frankfurters, hamburgers, sauerkraut, and dachshound were changed to American names. German also stopped being taught in schools.

    Explosives Heard in London
    Explosions blowing up on the German line in France were heard in London. The mines that were put to destroy the German front line were so loud that they were hear by the Prime Minister 140 miles away.
  • Tank Genders

    Tank Genders
    Tanks had genders in WW1. Male tanks had connons attached and the females carried machine guns. The prototype tank was called Little Willie.

    On April 2nd 1917 the US declared war. We entered into the first world war. The US declared war on the Central Powers.
  • Everyone Served

    Both Native Americans and African Americans served during the war. Even though they they weren't legally citizens until 1924, nearly 13,000 Native Americans served. over 200,000 African Americans served.
  • Journey to Europe

    Journey to Europe
    Arnold was assigned to recruit men, one of them was his younger brother Howard. However, because there was no room, they arrived on different ships with different companies. On November 1st 1917, he was promoted to corporal, about the time they were put out to sea.
  • Combat

    Lorraine was the first place they were involved in combat. There, they experienced what trench warfare was like. He attained the rank of sergeant on April 4th 1918. Sometime during this, Howard was on a convoy that suffered a gas attack, Howard was the only one to survive.
  • Wounds

    Wounds
    Military records state Arnold was wounded on July 15th 1918. It happened on the Champagne front, when a shell exploded right in front of him. A fragment gashed his back, leaving a scar for the rest of his life.
  • WW1 Ends

    WW1 Ends
    On November 11th 1918, World War 1 ended. Both sides were tired of fighting but the Central Powers decided to finish it. They signed the armistice that ended WW1, and made November 11th known as Veterans Day.
