Lousiana Purchase
In 1803 Thomas Jefferson wanted New Orleans because it was a good port city but i dont think he thought he was gonna get 800,000 sq miles along with it. The Louisiana Territory was sold to America for 15 million dollars it included 800,000 sq miles thats 4 cents an acre! Napoleon the French leader sold it to America. He sold it to us because he was in debt and needed money to fund for an upcoming war. I think its safe to say that Thomas Jefferson got a whole lot more than he bargained for. -
Corps of Discovery
When you acquire 800,000 sq miles your gonna need someone to explore it. The corps of discovery was a team who explored the Louisiana Territory trying to find a northwest passage to the Pacific for trade and to find out as much as they could about the land. The Corps of Discovery was led by two men Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and a translator named Sacagawea. While they did not find a water route to the Pacific they did find many different species. However the expidition was'nt a failure -
War of 1812
The War of 1812 is one of the only wars that ended in a tie. The War of 1812 lasted from June 18 1812 to December 24 1814. the war had many nicknames The Forgotten War, Revolutionary War Part ll,The War of Poor Comunicaton. The War of 1812 ended in a stalemate which means a tie. The result of The War of 1812 didnt please many Americans leaving them without a sense of nationalism. -
Florida/Adams-Onis Treaty
Andrew Jackson and his men are mostly the reson we have Florida today. The Florida Territory was owned by Spain before America owned it. Border disputes were happening during this time in Forida and Andrew Jackson dis obeyed his orders and invaded Florida. In fear of starting a war the two sides signed the Adams-Onis Treaty giving America the Florida Territory. Even though Andrew Jackson dis obeyed his orders we are very glad he did. -
Monroe Doctrine
The Western Hemisphere is off limits! The Monroe Doctrine was signed by President James Monroe in 1823. It stated that America didnt want any other countries declaring war on America or be involved in anything America was doing. In return the Doctrine said that America wouldnt get involved with things the other countries are doing. America just wanted to be the top dog in the Western Hemisphere. -
Indian Removal Act & Trail of Tears
Native Americans must hate Andrew Jackson. In 1830 Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act. It kicked all Native Americans off their lands and sent them to reservations in Oklahoma. To get to there reservation Native Americans took a trail called The Trail of Tears many Native Americans died on this trail. Because of Andrew Jackson Native Americans are where they are now. -
Texas
America didnt want Texas; Texas wanted us. People who lived dring this time were under rule of Mexico and Texas didnt like Mexicos rules. after many battles the Texans captured the Mexican President and General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and in exchange for his life he gave Texas the independece it wanted. After Texas became its own country but in fear of another war with Mexico Texas wanted to join America and did. Texas proved that they are very tough. -
Oregon Territory
54 40 or fight! Until 1846 the Oregon Territory was joint occupied by America and Great Britain. The 54 40 or fight slogan was used by James K. Polk this ment that America wanted all of the Oregon Territory up to the 54 40 latitude line or else they would go to war with Great Britain. Eventually in 1846 the two sides agreed on the 49th parralell latitude line. It is good to know that someone is willing to fight for our country. -
Mexican-American War
The last stop in Manifest Destiny. The Mexican-American War lasted from 1846 to 1848. When the American Army captured Mexico City the War ended. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo ended the war and gave America the southwestern states we have today. these states were the last states involved in Manifest Destiny.
