Pragmatic sanction
Maria Theresa's father was the last male representative of the Hapsburg family. So inorder for his daughter to inherit his titles he issued the Praagmatic Sanction that said it was ok and he had all of the major powers sign it. This is important because it was the only way that Maria Theresa was going to become queen of Austria.

17 Monks lead by Mekhitar, are expelled from their former monastery in Greece. These monks set out to make sure the Armenian culture stayed alive. This is important because this is where Armenian culture survived the diaspora.

Her father was the last male representatic of the Hapsburg family. This is important because it is the beginning of Maria Theresa's life.

James Oglethorpe was a member of Congress famous for his efforts on prison reform. He and someone else in Parliament got the idea of a colony in America to dump all of the poor people. He was given permission by the government in 1732 and went to America in 1733 to build. This is important because it is now one of our countries.

The War of Austrian succession
As soon as Maria;s father died, King Fredrick ll of Prussia saw this as an opportunity to attack. Prussia tried to attack Silesia and bavaria and France invaded land from the west. When the war ended she lost Silesia, but she kept her country. This war is important because it is the first time of many that Maria's land is threatened by another major power. -

Maria Theresa was officially crowned on June 25, 1741. the ritual included her wearing the crown of St. Stephen and holding his shield nd tattered mantle which is the symbol of Hungarian auhtority. This is important because it is th official beginning of her reign.

Benjamin Franklin invented this once he himself understood electricity and tested it out on his own home. It is simply a metal rod that conducts electricity and passes it safely to the ground. This is important because it saves many houses from catching on fire from lightning.

Maria's reforms
Maria Theresa is recognized as one of the greatest Austrian rulers of all time. This is becuase all of the positive reforms she made to her country. She overhauled the tax system to require payment from the nobility and clergy, established crown courts, built a national army, encouraged agriculture and business, and made education a responsibility of the state not the church. This is important because it shows that even a woman can be a great ruler too.

the Seven Years War
Maria felt that she was powerful enough to have another conflict with Prussia after making her reforms. Maria made allies with France and Russia and got ready to attack, but was surprised when Prussia attacked one of Austria's allies, Saxony. After 7 years, Maria signed the Treaty of Hubertusberg which ended the war. This was important because it was one of Maria's major wars during her reign.

Unlike most marriages of that time, the marriage between Maria Theresa and her husband Francis Steven of Lorraine was one of true love and not for political advantage. She became so sad that she wore mourning colors until th day she died in 1780. This is important because after this happened Maria became a different leader. Hr reforms were much slower and she became very withdrawn and depressed.

In the later part of her life , Maria tended to stay away from conflicts and fighting and focused on human concerns. A big part of this were serf reforms. Throughout the empire, the peasants were made to pay work dues to their lords. This shows what a kind and caring person sh is.
