King's Marriage and Family
Dr. King and Coretta Scott got married near Alabama on June 18, 1953. Throughout their relationship, they had four children: Martin, Yolanda, Dexter, and Bernice. -
Pastor
Dr. King became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He resigned five years later. -
Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks got arrested for refusing to offer her seat to a white man on the bus. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Dr. King became the president of the Montgomery Improvement Association which was organized as a result of Rosa Park's actions and indictment. The Montgomery bus boycott begins with this organization. -
The Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee
The SNCC was founded in April and held their first meeting on the 15th. -
"I Have a Dream"
King delivers his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The crowd estimated at 250,000 people. -
School girls Killed in Birmingham
During Sunday morning services, a bomb exploded and killed four little girls inside of a church in Birmingham, Alabama. This was the third bombing within 11 days in Birmingham. -
Achievements in 1964
Dr. King received the Noble Peace prize, he published the book "Why We Can't Wait," and congress passed the Civil Rights act, all in 1964. -
The March
Dr. King leads a 54-mile march, from Selma to Montgomery, to support black voter registration. They marched from Selma to Montgomery. -
Dr. King's Assassination
Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis in 1968 by James Earl Ray at around 6:00 PM while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine motel. He was pronounced dead almost an hour later at St. Joseph Hospital.
