One of the first court cases on segregation. Started when Homer Plessy was sitting on a white section of a train even though he was black. Emphasized "separate but equal." as a result of the case. -
Brown vs. Board of Education

Death of Emmett Till
14 year old boy who got murdered because he talked to a white girl. His mother Mamie Till Bradley opted for an open casket so that the world could see the tragedy. Mose Wright testified and pointed at the two white men who killed him, deeming him a hero. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Boycott started when Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. lead the boycott and used ideas based on Ghandi. Boycott worked because Supreme Court found the segregation to be unconstitutional. -
Little Rock Nine
Nine students in Little Rock Arkansas who attended the first integrated school. Governor Faubus tried to prevent the students from entering the school by sending the Arkansas National Guard. Tennessee Sit-ins

Birmingham, Alabama Movements

Death of Medgar Evers
Medgar Evers was the first field secretary for the NAACP in Mississippi. Became a target to those who opposed desegregation. Was killed by a gun shot in the back of his head. -
March on Washington
Large movement that occured in Washington DC. Martin Luther King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Speech was focused on equality and racial justice. -
Freedom Summer
An approach to get more blacks to vote. Needed more blacks to win the vote because Mississippi had the lowest African American voter registration. Failed due to the slowness of federal protection. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Outlawed segregation based on race and ethnicity. This act was first proposed by JFK but was signed by Lyndon Baines Johnson. Helped African Americans by giving them the same rights that white people had. -
Selma to Montgomery March
A march that was led by Martin Luther King Jr. Started in Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama. Tried to bring more exposure to the problems that black voters faced. -
Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
Assassinated when he was standing at a second story balcony when a sniper shot him in the neck. Assassin was known as James Earl Ray. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 as a result. -
Death of Rosa Parks
