Maxon shows America Gregory's Journals

Originally, they are used to help find out about Halloween, but afterwards, America finds information about Gregory that she doesn't like. This event is also important because very few people know abut them, and he hasn't shown anything remotely like these journals to any of the other girls.

The Halloween Party at the Palace

Here, America gets to see her family again. Maxon basically throws the party for America and she can't believe he did this for her. Also, this is where Maxon tells America's father he intends to marry her as soon as possible. It's also where he would've proposed, but sadly did not because he wanted to wait until the Selection was over. America also promised she'd stay with him.

Marlee and Carter's Caning

Marlee and Officer Woodwork (Carter) were caned (beaten with canes) due to their treason against Prince Maxon because they were caught sharing an intimate moment. This event was very important because it vividly showed what happened if you "cheated" on Maxon and caused America to doubt if she still wanted to be with Maxon. It's the event that created the most distance between them.

Celeste and America Fight

Here, America slapped Celeste, initiating the fight because Celeste said Marlee got what she deserved and called her a very mean name. America was almost sent home, but Maxon thought they were just acting this way because it had only been one day since what happened with Marlee occurred.

America Reads Rude Magazine

Celeste gives America a magazine that begins about Marlee, but ends up ranking the Elite's popularity in the public, which has America in dead last. This really shakes her up about if she could actually be princess because she knows the king doesn't like her, but now neither does the public.

America Notices Kriss and Maxon Closeness

Around this time, America is picking up the little hints that Kriss is more than just another girl in the Selection to Maxon. She thought that Maxon only had eyes for her, but she may be wrong. Kriss and Maxon's closeness also increases the distance between Maxon and America.

Rebels' First Attack

The southern rebels attacked this time, and they are worse than the northern rebels. The southerners left very cryptic notes, in blood, mud, and paint, "we're coming". An attack by the rebels is always major, but everyone was safe, this time.

Rebels' Second Attack

This attack was done by the northern rebels and during the attack, America ran out into the woods to avoid being shot by any of the rebels inside. She got lost by the next morning, hid in a tree, and was spotted by a female northerner, but the girl didn't say anything to the other rebels. So, it seems that northerners really are less radical than the southerners.

Celeste, Elise, and Natalie's Reception (1st)

A lot went wrong during their reception; they wore different colored dresses (Celeste's was too revealing) and their flowers were wrong. The reception was very important because it was a big factor in if the girls were home or kept at the palace, still in the competition.

Kriss and America's Reception (2nd)

America and Kriss's reception was amazing; the food was great, their guests were enjoying themselves, and Silvia totally fell in love with everything about it. But it wouldn't have mattered how they did, Maxon wasn't going to let go of either one of them after the event.

Maxon shows America the Princess Suite

One, he hasn't shown any other girl the Princess Suite and is giving her a hint at what she's in store for because he's choosing her as his princess, no doubt. Two, Marlee is behind a hidden door in the sweet. After her and Carter's caning, Maxon kept them there where they have under-the-radar jobs and they got married two days after the caning. America is so appreciative and ecstatic. She sees that if Maxon could've stopped the caning, he would've.

America's Suggestion to Help the Community

America proposes that the government get rid of the castes, a very unpopular opinion. Afterwards, Maxon's father says America must be sent home that night, but Maxon stands up to him and tells him she won't be. The king hates America even more now. This is also the moment where Maxon loses his trust in her because she presented a book on national television that she swore she'd keep a secret.

America and Maxon in the Bunker

In this chapter, Maxon asks America if she ever loved him and she said yes. Then he said he was glad at some point they felt the same about each other. So, they both indirectly said that they loved each other. I think this is the moment America realized she wanted to not just be princess, but also Maxon's wife.

Rebels' Third Attack

In this attack, Maxon and America hide in a servant bunker. Readers and America learn that the king beats Maxon and gave him the gashes on his back. She nurses his injuries. There was much tension in the air due to the events that just occurred, but as time passed, they could talk normally again.

America Can Stay!

Maxon persuades his father to let America stay because he tells him America practically saved him. Maxon tells America she does not have his trust, the king makes his feelings about America audible and clear to her, and she tells her maids she's staying and wants to fight for Maxon. Her maids are completely ready to help her win.
