Battle of Hastings

Oct 14, 1066

The Battle of Hastings brought feudalism to England, and brought Europe's customs to England. The important people during this time was William the Conqueror and Harold Godwinson.

Crusades

Period: Mar 23, 1096 to Apr 12, 1204

The crusades were meant for the Roman Catholics to get Jerusalem. A lot of peasants were sent to fight, and they were promised immidiate salvation in heaven. As for the knights they could own the land they counquered, and they werre able to fight. Pope Urban the II wanted to reunite the western and eastern side and make it one. He also wanted his knights to stop fighting agaisnt each other but to be untited and fight other people. His main goal was to get the Holy land back.

Abbot Suger and St. Denis

Nov 24, 1144

Abbot Suger made St. Denis during his life time, he wanted it to be a modern church and very unique. The style he made the church is now caled Gothic. The doors are pointed at the top making it have more windows at the bottom, and it had colored windows so when the sun was shining through the windows it looked really cool. It had a high roof and many little rooms for praying.

Louis VII + Eleanor

Jan 28, 1147

Eleanor joins Louis on the second crusade to get the holy land back.

Henry II + Eleanor

Apr 24, 1151

Both crowned king and queen of England. Ruled from borders of Scotland all the way to Spain. Henry makes Eleanor his home prisoner after supporting her sons to be rebellious agaisn their father, after cheating on Eleanor with a younger girl.

English Common Law

Sep 30, 1154

The important person throughout this time period was King Henry II. He used law courts for power, set up juries and court. He also set up grand juries and trial juries.

Ricard the Lionhearted

Jan 27, 1157

King Richard and King Phillip lead the third crusade. Richard was capture by Germans while on hsi way home after the crusade. Eleanor gave the money to take Richard back and named him King. Phillip got very upset, so theyhad a war. Ricard died of an arrow , so John became king.

Thomas Becket

Jan 26, 1162

He becomes Henry's chancellor which is a person who advises him and helps him make laws and is like a secretary. He got murdered in Canterbury Cathedral.

Inquisition

Mar 27, 1184

The Inquisition was when they made people covert to a christian right then and there or they would execute them.

Francis of Assisi

Mar 25, 1209

Francis of Assisi founded the first order of the Friars in 1209. His friars were known as the Franciscans, and they lived in towns and taught christianity to the people there.

Magna Carta

Jun 30, 1215

King John was very unfair with his citizens so they created 63 laws and made King john sign it. They forced King John to sign it, and left him with no other choice, but to leave if he didn't sign it which meant he wouldn't have anyone to rule.

Expulsion of Jews from Europe

Jul 27, 1290

Isabella the Queen of Spain along with her husband Ferdinand , hated jews from refusing to become a christian, so they weren't allowed in Spain.

Parliament

Nov 13, 1295

Edward I called a meeting, and certain people can help him make laws and advise him. The parliament was made up of two knights from every country.

Hundred Years' war

Period: Jan 27, 1346 to Feb 26, 1453

Edward III and Henry V played the important part in this war. It was about who was going to rule France and take over France.

Black Plague

Mar 1, 1346

A deadly disease tha killied 38 million Europeans. The disease went to India, China, Asia, Arabia, and Europe. It wiped most of the people out, it was highly contagious too.
