    Early in 1801, Meriwether Lewis was appointed to be Thomas Jefferson's personal secretary. Meriwether was a Republican just like Jefferson, but the appointing of Meriwether was probvably due to a political standpoint.     Picked as a commander, Lewis is sent to Philadelphia, where he learns from leading scientists what he must look out for during the expedition. Lewis writes to a friend named William Clark, asking if he wanted to join him on the trip. Lewis accepts the request.

    In the Summer of 1804, Lewis and Clark encountered a Missouri Indian village, but there were no Indians. Later they found one Missouri Indian who told them that there were 20 lodges with Indians that have been hit by smallpox. Lewis and Clark sent out some people who later came back with some Indians.

    Lewis and Clark discoved a group of small squirrel like animals who burrowed in the ground. They attempted to catch them by pouring water into their holes, forcing them to come up. Lewis and Clark caught one and killed the other.

    When trying to find a place to stay in the winter, lewis and Clark found a french trapper named Toussaint Charbonneau to translate. One of his two wives names was Sacagewea. Sacagewea was very much needed since her tribe had horses and she knew the land well.

    When Lewis first saw the Blackfot Indians, he gave them gifts to help furthur their cause of becoming friends with the indians. They invited them to their camp and later awoke to the Indians trying to steal their horses and rifles. Lewis then shot an Indian.

    During an Elk hunting trip one of the members of the Corps accidentily shot Lewis. Lewis then thought that there were Blackfot Indians with them. However, the Corps member that shot him confessed and Lewis was fine. (No day was given)

    In September 1806, after arriving in St. Lewis, Meriwether sent the first few letter's to Jefferson. These letter's were given to George Droulliard, to John Hay a postmaster, to the President. One of the letters talked about how they had sufficiently explored the area.(No day was listed)
