First Fleet arrives in New South Wales
30% out of 756 Convicts arrived in New South Wales were Catholic. Most Irish had no interest in catholic faith or religion. In 1788 Governor Phillip ordered the convicts and the free settlers to attend the Anglican church. If the convicts did not go to the Anglican church they would get flogged. Some of the convicts tried to born the church because they would like a catholic church instead but of cause it did not work. -
Catholic settlers want a catholic priest
Governor Phillip was worried that if he let the Catholic's have a catholic church they would gain up and tell bad lies about the Anglican church. The only way Catholic's could keep up their faith was to say a traditional prayers such as the rosary. Sometimes they gathered in each others homes on a Sunday to say some of the prayers of a mass. -
The first priests arrive in New South Wales
Fr Dixon and 2 other priests came to N.S.W as free settlers. They were not allowed to have Catholic Church's. Governor king allowed him to conduct a school because he trusteed him as an educated member. But then, after waiting king allowed Fr Dixon and the 2 other priests to work as a priest among the people. -
First Mass allowed to be celebrated
Fr Dixon had his first official mass and It was held in Sydney. As well Fr Dixon was aloud to baptised children after that . -
The First Free Priest arrived
Father O'Flynn was sent to New South Wales as a free settler. But The pope in N.S.W was not catholic so they sent back the catholic priest home. -
First Offcial Catholic Priests arrive
