    The Chinese began immigrating to the United States in 1849 where it was divided into three periods. The first period ended in 1882 due to the Chinese Exclusion Act passed by President Chester A. Arthur which limited the number of Chinese immigrating to the U.S.

    The State Newspaper was founded by the Gonzales brothers in 1891. The symbol for the paper is the palmetto which symbolizes the brothers commitment to South Carolina. The state is a very popular and honorable newspaper in South Carolina

    The start of a hard time for South Carolina farmers
    from 1893 through 1911 seven hurricanes came through this area destroying crops making farmers loose money. South Carolina's rice industry never recovered making people have to migrate north to make money or because they had so little money they would work in textile mills.

    The Great Migration begins
    Many African Americans were still being discriminated against due to the Jim Crow Laws. They started migration North seeking jobs, money, and freedom from discrimination. There were no jobs for African Americans because the only jobs were in textile mills which could only be held by whites.
