  • Wizards of the Coast is founded

    Wizards of the Coast is founded
    Wizards of the Coast, the company that currently produces Magic, was founded in 1990 by Peter Adkison, the CEO of WOTC from 1990-2001. It was originally run through Adkison's basement, producing role-playing games and the like. It was not a very well known company at the time.
  • Adkison is approached by Garfield about the board game RoboRally

    Adkison is approached by Garfield about the board game RoboRally
    Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic, went to Adkison to see if he could get his board game, RoboRally, published. Wizards rejected him, saying they didn't have the resources to produce a board game. Adkison asked Garfield to create a portable game that could be played while waiting in line for a convention. Garfield then began working on what we know as Magic.
  • Magic debuts

    Magic debuts
    Magic makes its first appearance at the 1993 Origins Game Fair. It was a massive success, the first ever Magic players buying up all of what had been believed to be a full year's supply of cards. Wizards was forced to make a reprint immediately. As the game continued to grow in popularity, Wizards printed more and more to keep up with the demand.
  • The DCI (Duelist's Convocation International) is created and implemented

    The DCI (Duelist's Convocation International) is created and implemented
    The DCI is a tournament system created to provide game rules, tournament operating procedures, and other materials to tournament organizers and players. It also has a judge system to provide consistent rules enforcement and fair play. The first time a player participates in a sanctioned event (an event that follows and complies to the rules of the DCI), the player receives a DCI card that they must then go online and activate so their stats and infractions are tracked.
  • The first Pro Tour is held

    The first Pro Tour is held
    The Pro Tour is a Magic event where the best players in the world play. There are four ways one can get an invite to the PT. One is having finished in the Top 25 of the most recent PT. Another is finishing in the Top 4 in a regional PT Qualifier. The Grand Prix is a Magic tournament that placing highly in will get you a Pro Tour spot. Finally there is a MTG Hall of Fame. Currently there are only 17 members which are not only qualified to go to any Magic event for life but also get paid to do so
