  • First free school

    First free school
    Virginia opens the first free school but in the south school is still seen a an issue to be address privately in comfort of a persons home. As knowledge is power the south felt the could not trust the schools with this power
  • The Massachusetts Law of 1647

    The Massachusetts Law of 1647
    This law began to prepare towns to become more educated as towns of 50 families had to hire a schoolmaster and towns with a 100 had to prepare kids for Harvard. This gave wave to abundance of schools and educating people to read and write.
  • South Carolina Public Library

    South Carolina Public Library
    The first U.S. supported library was established and gave breakthrough to continue to educate the public but only lasted momentarily due to it's harsh rules.
  • Christoper Dock, The German arrives

    Christoper Dock, The German arrives
    A famous educator who came to Pennsylvania and opened a school called school management but also wrote a book on teaching print in Colonial America.

    Swiss born philosopher who used his ideas and principles to shape education by writing a book on his view of education and the importance of early childhood
  • Boston High

    The first public high school is opened in Boston, Massachusetts that was created to teach trade in specific jobs and subjects.
  • National Teachers association

    National Teachers association
    The NTA is formed by 43 educators in Philadelphia and is now known as the NEA. This association was formed to give education a voice on the national level.
  • Department of Education

    Department of Education
    The department of education was established to help create better schools. The government begin applying assistance to improve education when needed.
  • The Committee of Ten

    The Committee of Ten
    The NEA establishes a base curriculum for high school that is based off of a college level. The Committee of Ten helped reorder and systematize education

    The rate of students dropping out of school has drawn concern and Columbus, Ohio school board creates the first junior high school to reduce the high school dropout rate

    After world war 2 the Progressive Education Assosciation is formed to help reform the American Education system with Seven guided principles. Also states got laws funding transportation to school.

    Brown vs. Board of education of Topeka gives another push in the direction of helping establish equality in education.

    The Elementary and Secondary Education act provided funded for low income students which led to the formation of many programs.

    This gave light to prevent schools from discriminating against other cultures and making room for social barriers to be broken so everyone has an equal chance at an education.

    No child left behind was established to begin holding schools accountable for their students achievements and success

    This act helped provide 90 billion in funding to repair, reform, and the modernization of schools
