My teacher taught me how to tune using a tuning fork. I would hit the tuning fork on my knee, then place the bottom of the tuning fork on the bridge of my instrument so I could hear the pitch. -

These clip on tuners are amazing because they determine pitch solely on vibration. This enables you to tune your instrument in a noisy room since the tuner only monitors vibration from the one instrument to which it is clipped. -

Tuners on the iPhone are ultra convenient. I use these apps all the time in my teaching for tuning and more. -
iPhone watch app
I found a cool tuner app for my Apple Watch where the watch will pulse to a pulse that I set. This is a very cool tool for 'feeling' the pulse and maintaining a steady beat. -
Clip on tuners for violin
I LOVE these tuners for students because they stay on the instrument - you don't ever have to take them off and they enable students to easily and accurately tune in a noisy classroom.
