Old metronome

Music Tuners and Metronomes

  • First tuner

A pitch-pipe came with my first violin. It wasn't super accurate, but having a pitch pipe was the 'cool' accessory in my 7th grade orchestra.
  • First metronome

    First metronome
My parents gave me a metronome like this for Christmas after I started taking private violin lessons. I didn't enjoy using it for practice, but it was fun to play with!
  • Tuning Fork

    Tuning Fork
My teacher taught me how to tune using a tuning fork. I would hit the tuning fork on my knee, then place the bottom of the tuning fork on the bridge of my instrument so I could hear the pitch.
  • All in one

    All in one
When I got my first teaching job, I bought this amazing all-in-one tuner/metronome. I bought the loudest one I could find to help me hear the pitch while trying to tune classes of 40+ beginners.
  • Digital Piano

    Digital Piano
In 2001 I bought my first digital piano with a built-in metronome feature. I still use it today!
  • Tuner/Metronome with needle

    Tuner/Metronome with needle
This tuner/metronome shows a needle on the screen to show small pitch variations to help adjust pitches to be perfectly in tune.
  • Clip on Tuner

    Clip on Tuner
These clip on tuners are amazing because they determine pitch solely on vibration. This enables you to tune your instrument in a noisy room since the tuner only monitors vibration from the one instrument to which it is clipped.
  • iPhone Tuner apps

    iPhone Tuner apps
Tuners on the iPhone are ultra convenient. I use these apps all the time in my teaching for tuning and more.
  • iPhone watch app

    iPhone watch app
I found a cool tuner app for my Apple Watch where the watch will pulse to a pulse that I set. This is a very cool tool for 'feeling' the pulse and maintaining a steady beat.
  • Clip on tuners for violin

    Clip on tuners for violin
I LOVE these tuners for students because they stay on the instrument - you don't ever have to take them off and they enable students to easily and accurately tune in a noisy classroom.
