A severe famine affects Ireland, about 400,000 people died. -
Landowners
1760 and onwards, landowners enclose common land for grazing cattle. Men called whiteboys (because they wear white shirts or smocks to disguise themselves) destroy fences and attack cattle. -
Protest
Protestants form secret society, the Oakboys and the Steelboys to protest about rates and rents. -
Catholics
Catholics are allowed to buy land. Most restrictions on Catholic education and the Catholic clergy are removed. -
