In 1953, apartheid laws meant that many blacks and non-whites had to abandon their dreams. Africans were not allowed to continue school, so they could not work for the government.

Non-violent Protest
Nelson Mandela did non-violent protest until he realized that they didn't work and so he started to use violence. -
Put in prison
Once he was captured and sentenced, in 1962, for 5 years in prison he was presented to horrifying conditions. It was very cold, but even then, they made him wear very little clothing.

Planning a Plot

President de Klerk and Mandela each were awarded with the Nobel Prize for Peace. Mandela thanked de Klerk for helping Africa move past its ominous history of racism.
