    Spain was losing control of its colonies in the new world due to a French Invasion. This lead to Spain only trying to hold onto their richer colonies and this created hated towards Spanish born elite. First stage of independence was when the Captaincy General of Guatemala declared independence from Spain.

    The United states and Britain express interest in Nicaragua in the 1800's. They saw it as a country with strategic importance. The British first came in and expelled all the Nicaraguan.

    Fact: Many years later in the 1900's, the U.S. intervene in Nicaragua once again and with a large force stop a revolt that was going to occur.

    The conservative party ruled for 36 years which resulted in progress and prosperity. This ended when the liberals who were led by General Jose Santos Zelaya to advantage of the chaos when Sacasa tried to retain power.

    United States Intervention
    The U.S. Once again expressed interest in the 1900's because of isolationist sentiment, Zelaya was angry that the U.S. chose panama for the canal and relations between the two countries deteriorated. Civil war broke our however the U.S. sent 400 mercenaries and the president resigned.
    Fact: The U.S. entered into a series of treaties with five Central American countries.

    Somoza held executive power by being directly president as well as having puppet presidents. He was a strong leader taking control using the economy and military.

    Rise of the FSLN
    This organization was founded by Jose Carlos Fonseca Amador. It originally began as a group of marxist. The group struggled to gain members and finally in 1970 they got enough support from students and peasants. In 1975 Somoza and the Nation guard lead a violent campaign against the FSLN

    Despite Somoza term ending in 1971 he changed up the constitution to stay in power until 1972. However, he received a lot of pressure from his party and negotiated a political agreement.
