    She was born in Moda, Istanbul, as one of the two daughters of a Balkan immigrant family. His father, Fikri Marmara, a Marxist, was an accounting manager. His father immigrated to Istanbul from Pleven, Bulgaria, and his mother from Vidin.

    She started her university life at the faculty of literature of Istanbul University, but could not continue there due to political reasons and took the exam again and accepted to the Department of English Language and Literature at Boğaziçi University.

    In 1982, she married industrial engineer Kağan Önal, whom she met among friends. They lived in Libya for 16 months due to her husband's job.

    She graduated from school in 1985 with her thesis titled Analysis of Sylvia Plath's Poetry in the Context of Her Suicide.

    After graduation, he started working at a holiday village in Marmaris. Although she worked as a secretary in different companies and as a civil servant in the Egyptian Consulate, her business life did not last very long.
