    Agriculture in the South
    Through the shift from tobacco to wheat cultivation, George Washington hoped that slavery would gradually rid of the slave system. They saw this trend in states such as Virginia and Maryland. However the deep south did not follow the trend. Slavery became more profitable as cotton became the souths leading crop.

    The cotton gin made cotton more profitable. This product became more profitable in 1793 at 5 million pounds, to 1820 at 170 pounds.

    Embargo of 1807 cut off access to Brittish goods. Shortly there after, America built home factories in the North East.

    Shortly after the war of 1812, The Brittish opened the door to their goods allowing Americans to purchace their goods. This threatned American Factory workers.
  • The Tariff of 1816

    The Tariff of 1816
    The Tariff of 1816 protected American industry. As well as that this increased the price of imported goods by an adverage of 20-25%. This encouraged Americans to buy products from the United States. Lastly the Tariff helped industry, but hurt farmers.
  • Northeastern Factories

    Northeastern Factories
    New factories emerged in the Northeast, for a greater access to the money needed to build factories. The northeast had cheaper labor.The Souths climat did not favor agriculture, therefor factories wern't as common.

    The Wokmens Party was orginized to compete in local and state elections. The purpose was to make public education free, and limit working days to 10 hours. They supported labor unions.

    Slave Strikes

    " Oh! I cannot be a slave!" Sang the Lowell mill girls as they held their striks. The employers cut their wageses therefor these girls temporaily left their jobs. Eventually the women returned to work accepting reduced pay.
