-Her parents agree to let her stay if she finsishes her hours.
-Molly meets Vivian, 91 year old who was also a foster child.
-Mollys mom is still alive but she never took care of her and her father died when she was young. -

-She had 1 younger sister who was a month old when there mom got sick and 2 younger twin brothers.
-With there mom sick they didnt have much food.
-They used to live in Ireland where there dad couldnt keep a job but moved to America. -

-Vivians family was in a fire all they all died except her.
-The night of the fire she was put into someones house then put into foster care right away.
-She had noone left to take care of her since they were in a different country.
-The social workers say she needs to look presentable if she wants to get adopted cause they dont think anyone with want her.
-Vivian is then put on a train with 20 other orphans.
-Noone knows where they are going but she is left with a baby to take care of. -

-Vivians real name is Niamh but the social workers say that her name will get changed because noones like weird names.
-They also say it will hard for her to get adopted because of how she looks.
-On the train they hardly get any food and she is stuck with a baby she doesnt even know till they get off the train.
-She and all the other kids are still greiving the lose of there family or why they are on the train but the social workers dont care. They just want to get them out of that place. -

The stock market crashes and the family Vivian is living with loses all there money and has to fire alot of there sewers.
Vivian gets kicked out and put into another house.
The father of the new house attempts to rape her so she moves in with her teacher so she can get away from them. -

One day when Vivian is out with her friends she runs into Dutchy. They instantly connect again.
She ends up marrying him and moving in with him.
Dutchy is drafted into the world war and dies leaving Vivian and there new baby.
We find out that she put her child up for adoption and that her younger sister Maises never died in the fire but was dead now from old age. -

In the end Vivian ended up taking over the store, marrying Dutchys best friend and ended up a widow when he died. Molly helped her find her daughter and the book ended with her meeting her. -

When she is kicked out of her foster home by the cruel Dina, Molly is taken in by Vivian, who eventually allows Molly to interview her as part of her work on an American history assignment for school. Molly also introduces Vivian to the Internet and encourages her to seek out her long-lost daughter.
