    Roosovelt offered 10 million and 250,00 yearly rent to build canal. Colombians said their rights were worth more than that. Colombia held out for more money but Roosevelt didnt want to waste time bargaining

    Three days later the US and Panama signed a treaty giving US control over a 10 mile wide zone across the isthmus of Panama. US agreed to pay $10 million and $250,000 per year for rent. It was signed by a Frenchman acting for Panama. US needed canal for easier travel for battleships to ge places in urgent need and an easier route to Asia.

    A revolt happened in Panama with no fight back from Columbia.Roosevelt sent in 3 gunboats for support and 50 marines to hold back threatening forces.Americans were alarmed by this. Immediately recognized independence of Panama.

    US starts construction with Roosevelts famous statement "Make the dirt fly". Split into three parts, Atlantic, Central and Pacific. It took ten years and they did it because it would make travel to Asia for trade easier and battleships could get places faster.

    Malaria and yellow fever were killing many people in the canal. They thought the diseases came from damp air but Carlos Juan Finlay figured out they came from different mosquitos. William C Gorgas used many different methods and ways of killing mosquitosand nearly wiped out the diseases from the canal.

    They finished the canal in 1914. It was world changingand made traveling and trading for US and other countries way easier. It connected the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

    The panama was a hard task that other countries had tried to make but failed. It wasnt easy getting access to where we needed to build the canal.There was many struggles in the canal. It was world changing. We also learned how to control malaria and yellow fever.
    I learned that these people worked hard to be a part of something great. I also understand the sacrifices made by the people who built the canal
