Paul Feyerabend Life Work

  • Birth

    Born in Vienna he was a son of a civil servant and seamstress
  • Inducted to Arbeitsdienst

    The Arbeitsdienst was a work service introduced by the German Nazi Party
  • Drafted

    Paul Feyerabend was drafted into the Pioneer Corps of the German Army, and after basic training he volunteered for Officer school
  • Suicide

    At the age of 19 Paul learned of his mothers suicide
  • Success

    By 1944 Paul had become a decorated veteran earning one of the highest honors the Iron Cross and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and found himself as a teacher in officers school
  • Devastation

    A year after earning the Iron Cross Paul was shot in the hand and in the stomach after retreating from the Russian Army. The bullet hitting him in the stomach damaged his spinal nerves.
  • After War

    After WW2 Paul found himself receiving a fellowship to study singing and stage management in Weimar. With this he also joined the Cultural Ass. for the Democratic Reform of Germany.
  • Returns Home

    Paul returned to his home in Vienna to study History and Sociology, which then transferred to Physics. His first article written, on the concept of illustration in modern physics was published as well.
  • Doctorate

    By 1951 Paul had received a Doctorate in Philosophy for his thesis on basic statements. Upon that he applied for a British Council scholarship to study under Wittgenstein but Wittgenstein died before Paul could get to England. Feyerabend chose Popper instead.
  • Quantum Theory

    By 1952 Feyerabend had made it to England to study under Popper at the London school of economics. His concentration would be on Quantum theory and Wittgenstein.
  • Published

    In 1954 his first articles on quantum mechanics and Wittgenstein were published
  • USA

    1958 Paul had took up a visiting lectureship at the University of California Berkeley
  • Permanent

    1 year later Paul accepted a permanent position at Berkeley and applied for a green card to work in the U.S.
  • Consolations

    Publications of Consolations for the Specialist, which he attacks Popper from Kuhnian point of view
  • First Book

    By 1975 Paul was working on his first book Against Method, which his first thesis was there was no such thing as a scientific method.
  • English Publications

    Paul had his 1st 2 volumes of his English Publications of Feyerabends Philosophical Papers
  • Science as an Art

    By 1984 Feyerabend published his Science as an Art, in which he defends an explicitly relativistic account of the history of science accord to which there is change but no progress.
  • Farewell

    3 years later the Publication of Farewell to Reason, which was a volume in the collecting of some of his papers that had been published between 1981-1987
  • Marriage

    Paul marry's Grazia Borrini who he had earlier met at Berkeley in 1983. He married her in January of 1989 and then left for Switzerland and Italy in the fall, partly because the effects of the October earthquake that struck California that year.
  • Resignation

    Paul resigns from Berkeley in March of 1990
  • Death

    Paul Feyerabend dies in the Genolier clinic in Switzerland. But major memorial of his work takes places of the next 2 years. Pauld dies just short of his 70th birthday
