The First Commercially Successful Typewriter
This was the first successful typewriter. It was created by Christopher Latham Sholes, in our very own Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was created to get things done quicker. This was important in the evolution of the PC because our keyboards have the same letters in the same place as the typewriter, and this was the first thing that resembles the modern PC. This was very big for our society because the typewriter basically evolved into the keyboard which every computer has. -
ENIAC
The ENIAC (Electronic General-Purpose Computer) was the first computer to be able to solve a large number of numerical problems, and it was created for that reason. It was invented by John Mauchly in Pennsylvania. This was important because this was the first of anything like this and really helped the start with the personal computer. This is important for society today because this was the first thing to start using more electronic things and it really took a big step forward in the evolution. -
The Computer Mouse is Invented
This was the first computer mouse is invented by Douglas Engelbart at Stanford University. It was created so you can start using the mouse to navigate the computer instead of using keys. This was important because most modern computers besides the laptops have computer mouses. Even though it was invented in 1963 it did not become popular until Apple released the Macintosh in 1984.This is important for society because even today we still use a computer mouse and this was a good place to start. -
DRAM
DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) or otherwise known as RAM and was made for a new way to save data and become very popular in 1972. It was much improved over the older magnetic core memory, which had been used since the 1950's. DRAM was invented by Robert Dennard at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. This was a big step forwards towards collecting and saving data inside the PC. This important now because we still use things like this to save data, except its more advance. -
Osborne 1
This was invented by Osborne Computer Corporation, and this was the first successful portable microcomputer, and the main reason for why this computer was to "Break the price of computers". It didn't have great size, memory, or great speed. But in my mind this was a huge advancement towards modern laptops, as these were portable as well. This was also big for other competing companies because when they saw how well these computers were doing they had to lower the prices to better compete. -
IBM Personal Computer
The IBM Personal Computer was obviously invented by IBM, and was really big for the evolution of the PC because this was the computer that started associating the word "PC" to a desktop computer. This was such a good computer along with it's programs, most of the computers to be successful back then would need to be IBM compatible, with the exception going to the Apple Macintosh. This was good for the evolution from previous computers and really started to get more people to use computers. -
First .com Domain Is Used
This was the very first time this type of domain is used and surprisingly two years after this happened, only 100 dot-coms had been used to that point. This first domain was registered to Symbolics.com, of Symbolics Incorporated, of Cambridge, Massachusetts. This is important for the evolution of the PC because most of the websites we see, their domain is .com and this was the start of what was to come. This is also a big part of society because today we still use .com on a lot of the websites. -
World Wide Web
Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 while working at CERN in Switzerland. This was important for the PC because Without this invention we wouldn't have anything we have right now, or at least not as developed as we are now. And because of that, it is also big for society. Not only did he invent the world wide web he also made the URL, HTML, and HTTP. HTML is the formatting language of the web, and HTTP is the retrieval of linked resources across the web. -
Wifi Is Invented
In 1991 the NCR Corporation and the AT&T Corporation were credited with the invention of WiFi. This type of WiFi, was used for cashiers and at the time were under the name, WaveLAN and was created so they can start using things wireless. But in 1999 the WiFi Alliance held the WiFi trademark under the name of which most products are sold, and at this time is where using WiFi is getting more popular. This is big for society because Without WiFi we would still have phones hooked up to cords. -
Pentium Microprocessor
A Microprocessor is a computer processor that contains all the functions of a central processing unit of a computer. This was invented to have a better way to put everything inside a computer. This was big for society because just the small fact that these are still in use today with upgrades coming to them is really amazing because of how quick things change in this day and time. This was invented by a Indian engineer by the name Vinod Dham for Intel. -
Windows 95 Is Introduced
This is Microsoft's answer to Apple's GUI, and Windows had advanced video and audio features. This was big for the evolution because There were major changes made to the core components of the operating system, and overall was just a big upgrade from their last program, Windows 3.1. This is a important part of society because we still use windows programs and this started advancing the windows program. -
Google
Google was invented by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, while they were students at Stanford University. Google is a huge invention for society as literally almost everything we use here at school involves google whether its to look things up or using its many feautres. Without Google we could be using the Microsoft programs instead of Google but then would Microsoft programs be where they are now without the competition of Google? At the time it wasn't a huge invention but it most definitely is now. -
Transparent, Multi-Touch Phone
This would be a see through phone, with you being able to use it on either side mainly for looks. There would not be much of an advantage of this phone over other phones, because other than working the phone from both sides, it's just see through. Also, this would cause a problem where in order for the phone to not look that bad see through, they would have to make the battery smaller because it takes up so much space, but because of this the phone would have a much shorter life before it dies. -
Future PC
In the future the PC could be something as small as a ring, or a watch, and then it would allow you to click on it and the image would raise up and then you could use it then. Why this would be nice is because then you wouldn't need to carry a phone on you. It's important for society because you could use a much smaller device that would do the same thing as a larger device. -
3D Printers
By 2024 most people would have a 3D printer in there house, for the main reason so they could print anything they want from their computer into a real object. This would be a nice improvement for society because then you wouldn't have to go anywhere to do this, and I think we all can agree, this would be pretty fun to use. Some 3D printing companies are Stratasys, 3D Systems, and Materialize.
