    Peter the Great founded his city on a unhealthy swamp off the Neva river. The location was purposely chosen so ships could sail in. 25k to 100k people died working on the swamp.

    The Swedes invaded Russia and defeated Peter at Golovchin in July, but were defeated at the Battle of Lesnaya.. They then turned to the Ukraine, and Peter had anything valuable burned as the Russians fled. However, in the end Russia did win.
