  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    ESEA provided federal funding to states for education programs for disadvantaged students to support equity in education. Funds were distrubuted through a formula based on the number of lower-income students in a school. There was some questioning because the law interferred with states' rights.
  • Report "Reclaiming our Nation at Risk (federal report)

    The report said that our education system was not keeping pace with other nations which threatened children's oppurtunities as well as the future of the country. The report also said to raise expectations for academic performance in all schools and "more rigorous and measurable standards".
  • Improving America's Schools Act and Goals 2000 Educate America Act

    This act provided federal funds to help states in writing content standards. The goal was to adopt national K-12 performance goals for each year of school.
  • ESEA Reauthorization: "No Child Left Behind"

    George W. Bush pushed for the changes to better how states measure and report results concerning standards and accountability. So more standardized testing was put into place to make schools more responsible. Now about 10% of public education costs are now funded by the federal government, mainly through NCLB
