The Second Great Awakening
The Second Great Awakening was a change of thought and religion that most of America were a part of. Instead of the common belief that God had already decided where you were going after you died. Christianity taught that if you wanted to go to heaven you had to do good things here on earth and some people didn't think that owning someone was a sin.

The Fugitive Slave Law was a law passed that allowed slave hunters to capture runaway slaves from any state. It also bribed people to not let slaves be free. The commissioner would get paid more money if the slave was not let free than if the slave was freed. The north was very mad at this law because people were treating the runaway slaves very badly.

This completely repealed the Missouri Compromise which made a line where no slaves were permitted. This created arguments that made north and south even more divided.
