    On August 24, 1814 the British set fire to the U.S. Capitol and the White House. The British set fire to these places because they were angry with previous American decisions. Dolley Madison, the President's wife, had enough time to grab a special portrait of George Washigton. She put the painting in one of the underground tunnels underneath the White House.
