  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    Proclamation of Neutrality
    In the late 1700's Great Briton and France were at war. They each wanted the U.S. to coose a side/help them. In April, 1793 President George Washington created th Proclamation of Neutrality and declared the United States neutral in this war. This was a smart move because th U.S. was not ready for another war having just recovered from the War of Independance. This proclamation saved the U.S. a lot of maney and resources.

  • Alien and Sedation Acts

    Alien and Sedation Acts
    in 1798 President John Adams created the Alien and Sedation Acts to help protect the U.S. and its gov't. This act says that you have to be a resident of the U.S. for 14 yrs. before you can become a citizen. It also said that the U.S. could remove dangerous forieners and that citizens of enemy nations can be deported or imprisioned. These forieners got heavy penalties for working against the gov't. This act still affects citizens and would-be citizens today.

  • War with Tripoli

    War with Tripoli
    On May 14th, 1801 Tripoli declared war on the U.S. Tripoli was charging U.S. ships for protecting them. The charges eventually got to high and and the U.S. refused to pay them. In response President Thomas Jefferson had the U.S. build a stronger Navy and won the war in 1805. That started the U.S. to have a strong naval force from there on out.

    Loisiana Purchase

    France sold a huge chunk of land to the U.S. called the Louisiana Purchase. It doubled the size of the U.S. Thomas Jefferson was the president at this time. He sent Lewis and Clark to explore the territory and find the Northwest Passage. These events doubled the land size of the U.S. and got it many more states and territories.

    Battle of Tippecanoe

    This took place in the Northwest Territory. President James Madison wanted the Native Americans to stop hunting and start farming. The Native people were pushed off of thier land and replaced by white settlers. by 1815 400,000 White American settlers were in Ohio, and Native American rights became invalid. After this happened Natives were forced off of thier land and moved West which made them angry and caused thme many problems.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
    In 1823 President Monroe wrote a doctorine called the Monroe Doctorine that told European Countries to stay out of North and South American affairs. The affairs were regarding new countries governments. This Doctrine still affects and shapes America's forien policies today.

  • Tariff of Abominations

    Tariff of Abominations
    President John Quincey Adams put a tax on foriegn goods and made them more expensive. It was made to protect Northern State's industry. But the Southern States lost money on raw materials because other countries would not buy thier products.

  • Indian Removal Act

    Indian Removal Act
    In 1830 pressure from white American settlersforced natives off of their land. President Andrew Jackson did not stop them. In 1830 he created the Indian Removal Act and removed th Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Choctaw from their land and moved them to what is present day Oklahoma. They were marched on the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma and over 4,000 died. This still affect us today because it made many Natives upset and gave more room to white settlers.
