    Radio Invented
    Italian inventor, Marconi sent and received the first radio signal. It's possible that Marconi wasn't the first however he was most publicly known for being the first.
  • Audion Tube

    Audion Tube
    Lee Dee Forest created a vacuum tube that amplified signals that he called the Aduion Tube. Supposedly Reginald Fessenden actually created it however Forest gets credited for the invention.
  • Uncle Charlies

    Uncle Charlies
    Radio became popular enough to make people want to have their own stations. Due to this people with personal stations became known as Uncle Charlies. This posed as a problem when people became unable to pick up the stations they wanted to listen to.

    The first radio station 8XK was created. It was later renamed KDKA. Created by Frank Conrad and is still around today broadcasting in Pittsburg Pennsylvania.

    The WEAF aired the first advertisement. It was for an appartment complex that was charging $50. The advertisement was 10 minutes long.

    Due to the popularity of Uncle Charlies the FRC was established. Was made to organize the licensing of transmitters. It also assigned radio station frequencies, call letters and pwoer limits.

    Thise happened in the middle of the Great Depression. Everyone was livid about the radion and wanted to try get their mind off of money.
  • TV Appears

    TV Appears
    In the late 30's the TV appeared and brought the downfall of radio. Many people went for the TV over radio to get the visuals as well as the sound. This brought about a decline in radio popularity.

    It didn't work. Many radio stars tried to put their shows on TV however the voice actors' physical appearances didn't match the characters they were voicing in most cases.

    Due to loss of revenue for the radio shows the only remaining thing to save it was music. Due to limited ways of listening to music it was the prefect plan for safety. So with music radio was revitalized.

    Edwin H. Armstrong invented the FM radio for a clearer sound. Music was transitioned to FM while talk was primarily on AM. With this it brought more popularity to the radio.

    Music became so popular that t began to overpower most of the other radio purposes. With this music became a much more powerful factor in radio popularity.
  • Overpowering Radio

    Overpowering Radio
    Increasing popularity of music led to the creation of various ways to listen to music other than the radio. With this people have opted to use alternatives to the radio to listen to music they like.
