When the pilgrims lived in England there was only one church approved by the English rulers. If you didn't believe in that religion you can get hurt or go to jail. The pilgrims didn't want either of them so they went to find land in the new world -

Quakers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey
Penn was a man who was a quaker and got hurt believing in that. So Penn went to king Charles the 2 to give him land for a debt the king owed to Penn's father. So he used that land to make his own colony and have freedom of religion there.
