    Election of Nixon
    President Richard Nixon was elected on November 5, 1968. One of Nixon’s goals as president was to get the United States out of the Vietnam War and to make peace with the countries which is considered a conservative move. During the presidency of Nixon, he had a Tough on Crime Movement which was supported by many conservatives. He believed that criminals should not be treated softly by the state. Nixon resigned on August 8, 1974 after the Watergate Scandal which ruined his political career.

    Stagflation
    Stagflation, a combination of the words inflation and stagnation,was coined to describe the economic crisis in the 1970s where unemployment and inflation rates were very high at the same time. In 1971 President Nixon tried to improve the economy and stop stagflation by imposing a price freeze, but by 1975 inflation had begun to soar to very high numbers. Unemployment rates also continued to rise.

    A group of students who supported the Iranian Revolution took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. The Revolution was a result of the overthrow of Shah Pahlavi and Gram Khoemeini became the leader of Iran. The crisis was during Carter's presidency who people felt did a horrible job of controling the situation. This was a big blow in his re-election campaign, which he lost to the conservative Ronald Reagan. The day Reagan was inagurated, the hostages were released.

    Inaugurated on January 20th, 1980, Ronald Reagan won the presidential instituted an economic policy that came to be known as “Reaganomics”. Reaganomics was the economic policy of reducing taxes while simultaneously building up the army. The fast army build up can be considered a factor that contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union. Reagan was a conservative who believed in traditional families and the importance of the Christian God in America, winning a great deal of support from Churches.

    Re-election of Ronald Reagan
    In the 1984 election Reagan was running against former Vice President Walter Mondale. Mondale, a Democrat was Carter's running mate during their one term in office. Due to Reagan's popularity from his "Reaganomics" policy he almost shut out Mondale, winning the electoral vote 525-13, along with 58.8% of the popular vote.

    "Read my lips. No new taxes."
    This phrase was spoken by George H.W. Bush at the Republican Convention in 1988 following his nomination as the party's representative for President. When he took office he coldn't work to lower taxes because of the Democrat-majority House who felt raising taxes would better help the national budget deficit. This phrase came back to hurt Bush in his chances for a re-election in 1992 because there were new taxes. The loss in the 1992 election was the end of Conservatism.

    Early in Bush’s presidency, the Berlin Wall came down and the Soviet Union collapsed. He tried to pass acts through Democratically controlled Congress but Congress opted for raising taxes over the Republican’s suggestion to cut government spending. When one of his proposals was denied he accepted the Democrat’s plan of action and thus lost popularity with the Republican voters. Bush worked on space exploration and helped the ISS be built.

    Saddam Hussein was the sunni president of the shiite nation of Iraq, who attacked Kuwait in an attempt to control the oil industry. In response to the invasion, the U.N. sent troops that repulsed the Iraqi forces. Saddam remained the ruler of Iraq however until George W. Bush had Saddam arrested and executed.

    Fall of the Soviet Union
    Conservatism is the reason, praised Reagan. Reagan opposed detente and when the Soviet Union fell the people saw that he was the reason for the fall. Reagan was leading the country when the Soviet Union collapsed and was praised. However, Bush was president the last time the Soviet flag flew and when Gorbachev resigned, leaving Boris Yeltsin as leader of Russia.
