River Merchants Wife: A letter

  • Childhood memories

    Childhood memories
She is describing their time lives as children when they didn't know each other they were just in the same villiage. This picture fits in because it is just as the story when the boy is walking around the girl on his stilts.
  • Married at fourteen

    Married at fourteen
She is using the words "My Lord" to describe him when they first got married, almost like she has to serve him. This picture fits in with the story because they are young and have just gotten married but if you look closley the wife is turned more than the husband is and this means that she is more ingaged in him.
  • Togeterness

    Togeterness
In these 4 lines of the poem the wife is expressing the closeness that they have grown with each other, and all she can do is smile. This picture fits this section becasue in this section she says "I desired my dust to be mingled with yours", when i heard this line i thought of the two of them growing old together and being a happy couple.
  • The Departing

    The Departing
In these lines she describes how long he has been gone and what it's like at home. This picture fits with this section of this poem because it shows a girl looking down the river almost expecting to see someone she knows coming back.
  • The Regrets of Leaving

    The Regrets of Leaving
She describes how the husband left to go down river and was reluctant to leave her. I chose this picture, because it helped me to see that the mossy gate that was hard to open was a metaphor for their relationship begining to die out.
  • Re-Connecting

    Re-Connecting
In this passaege of the poem she is offering out an invitation that if he needs a place to stay her doors are always going to be open if he gives her a heads up. I chose this picture because i thought that she would at some point anticipate a visit from him
