    Ivan's dynasty came to an end in 1598, was a period of anarchu know as the Time of Troubles followed. Ivan IV was the first ruler to take the title of czar. He expanded the territories of Russia eastwards. He crushed the power of Russian nobility, known as the boyars.

    Michael Romanvo took dnyasty after Ivan dnyasty came to an end in 1598. That period didn't end until the Zemsky Sobor then they chose Michael Romanov as the new czar in 1613. His dynasty lasted unitl 1917.

    Peter the Great was one of the most prominent members. He became czar in 1689. Peter was an absolutist monarch who clamined the divine right to rule. Peter made a trip to the West. When he returned to Russia, he determined to westernize, or Europeaniza, Russia.

    Their was a long and hard-fought war with Sweden enabled Peter to acquire the lands he sought. On marshalnd on the Baltic in 1703, Peter began the construction of a new city, St. Petersburg, his window on the West. St. Petersburg was finished in Peter's lifetime and remained the Russian captital until 1918.

    Russia became a great military power. By his death in 1725, Russia was an important European state. Only this kind of moderniztion could give him the army and navy he needed to make Russia a great power.
