    Fedor Alekseev
    Fedor Alekseev was a cityscape and landscape painter. He studied landscape painting in the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1766-1773. Then he spent three years in Venice studying scene-painting. He painted pictures of many small towns that he visited in Southern Russia. (Red Square in Moscow)

    Karl Briullov
    Karl Briullov was the first Russian painter world renown. He was also Russia's first romance artist. Many of the men in his family were artists. In 1809-1821, he studied art in the “Academy of Arts” in St. Petersburg. He did so well in class that he surpassed his teachers before graduation. (The Last Day of Pompeii)

    Nikanor Chernetsov
    He studied in the Saint Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts under M.N. Vorobyev, and graduated in 1827. In 1827, he was awarded the big golden medal and got the title of the painter of the XIV degree. He also had a brother who was a painter. (Views of the Yelagin and Alexander Place)

    Ivan Aivazovsky
    He spent his childhood in poverty. People noticed his talent, entered the Simferopol gymnasium. St. Petersburg Academy of Arts was interested in his marine landscapes. In the autumn of 1836 he presented 5 marine portraits to the Academic exhibition. (Storm)

    Alexey Bogoliubov
    He studied at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. When he completed his studies, he was lucky and talented enough to become the artist of the Central Marine Headquarters. He was majorly influenced by Ivan Aivazovsky. (Marine Scene)

    Lev Lagorio
    He studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1845, he went on a sea voyage on the Grozinsky frigate to study the arrangement of warship. He traveled along the Baltic Sea coast to inspire his paintings. Then he was sent to Vyborg and to Caucasus to inspire his paintings. He later spent eight years in Italy .   • Ivan Shishkin

    Ivan Shishkin
    He was the son of a merchant. He started studying art at the School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in Moscow. Then he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1860 he was awarded the Academy’s Gold Medal. In 1871 he joined the Peredvizhniki (“The Wanderers”). He preferred to paint pine and oak forests while the forests are in dry or sunny conditions.     Nicholai Roerich
    Born in St Petersburg. He studied at the St Petersburg University Faculty of Law and the Academy of Arts. He later became an assistant to the Director of the Emperor’s Art Encouragement Society Museum. (Before the Rain)

    Natalia Goncharova
    She was born in Nagayevo, Russia. Her paintings brought some of the highest prices for works by women artists. She studied painting and sculpture at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. Unfortunately, she later died of cancer in 1962. (Rhododendrons)

    Born in Vinnitsa, a provincial town in the Malorossiya part of the Russian Empire, which is now known as Ukraine. He lost his father when he was young and had to count on only himself to become a successful artist.
