    Head of the Church dies and is not replaced

    The head of the church, Patriach Adrian, died and Peter the Great chose no predessor. Instead he handed over the control of church property to a government department called the Monastyrskii Prikaz in 1701. This ran the church on a monetary basis, where Peter had sole control.
  • Schookl Opened In Moscow

    The School of Navigation and Maths was founded in Moscow as the first navigation and math school to help the military. It was run by British teachers.
  • Newspaper Released

    A newspaper was released for the educated public called "Vedomosti", which was issued by the state. Peter the Great believed that not only should military leaderes be educated, but also the loyal public.
  • Colleges Opened For Commerce and Mines and Manfacturing

    Two colleges opened in 1718 for commerce and mines and manfacturing, showing the importance Peter the Great put on Russia's economy.
  • Church Hierarchy is Abolished

    The church was fully linked to the state, and was placed under control of the Holy Synod. The regulation stated completely what the clergy could and could not do.
  • 3rd Biggest Empire in History

    23.7 square kilometers is the extent of the empire at this point, rivaled only by the British.

    The beginning of World War II created many problems for Russia and weakened them as an empire, due to the German defeats.
  • Russian Empire Ends

    The Russian Provisional Government declares Russia a republic, thus ending the Russian Empire. This begins the Russian Revolution.
