  • The Naval Battle of Chemulpo, Korea

    The Japanese Imperial Navy squadron opened an unexpected strike against the Russian Fleet, which was spread among Chemulpo Bay (now part of Incheon, Korea). Japan was striking with 6 cruisers, 3-8 torpedo boats, dispatch boat, three transport boats and 2500 groud troops. Chemulpo was strategically signigicant, since it was the main port of Seoul.     Russia Fails to Defend Port Arthur
    ImageJapanese forces after multiple attempts manage to get in control of Port Artur's key strategical positions. After a day of fighting, Russians start retreating from their central Naval Base at Port Arthur towards Wolf Hills, five miles apart from the center of Port Arthur.

    On the night of 25 August, the IJA 2nd Division and IJA 12th Division under Major General Matsunaga Masatoshi engaged the 10th Siberian Army Corps to the east of Liaoyang. Fierce night fighting occurred around the slopes of a mountain called "Peikou", which fell to the Japanese by the evening of 26 August. Kuropatin ordered a retreat under the cover of heavy rain and fog, to the outermost defensive line surrounding Liaoyang, which he had reinforced with his reserves.

    The battle began on 25 August with a Japanese artillery barrage, followed by the advance of the Japanese Imperial Guards Division under Lieutenant General Hasegawa Yoshimichi against the right flank of the 3rd Siberian Army Corps. The attack was defeated by the Russians under General Bilderling largely due to the superior weight of the Russian artillery.     As a surprise of the Japanese, Russians did not unleash counterattack, but instead ordered that the outer defense perimeter be abandoned, and that all Russian to pull back to the second defensive line. The shorter lines were easier for the Russians to defend, but played out well for Japan's plans to encircle and destroy the Russian Manchurian Army.

  • Revolution of 1905

    In December 1904, a strike occurred at the Putilov plant in St. Petersburg. Sympathy strikes in other parts of the city raised the number of strikers to 150,000 workers in 382 factories.

  • The Treaty of Portsmouth

    The Treaty of Portsmouth
    ImageThe treaty formally ended the 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War. It was signed on September 5, 1905 in Maine, in the US. After Immediate cease fire, Russia was required to recognize Japan's claims to Korea, evacuate its forces from Manchuria and return its leases in southern Manchuria (containing Port Arthur and Talien) to China, and to turn over the South Manchuria Railway and its mining concessions to Japan. Russia was allowed to retain the Chinese Eastern Railway in northern Manchuria.
  • October Manifesto

    October Manifesto
    ImageResulted by the Revolution of 1905. Nicholas II issued the October Manifesto, a liberal scheme proposed by Witte. It granted civil liberties, the need for Duma consent before passing laws and a widening of the Duma electorate to include all Russians; mass celebrations followed; political parties formed and rebels returned, but acceptance of the Manifesto pushed the liberals and socialists apart.
