Erikson's Psychosocial Theory

  • Identity Vs. Confusion

    Jessica is attending college at a University in her home state. When she initially enrolled in her college courses she was very sure of what she wanted to do with her life and what her career would be, which was a math teacher. After her first semester at college she experienced the death of one of her immediate family members and that changed everything. After the death she was so unsure of whta she wanted to do. Jessica is experiencing the identity vs. confusion stage of Erikson's Theory.
  • Intimacy vs. Isolation

    After the death of Jessica's family member she struggled to socialize and continue to be a normal college student. Lucky for her, she had very close, and comforting friends who always checked on her and made sure she was doing well throughout the week. These friends really helped her cope, heal, and live a somewhat happy and normal life. Jessica experienced the intimacy vs. isolation stage of Erikson's psychosocial theory at this time.
  • Generativity vs. Stagnation

    At the age of 41 Jessica is happily marriec, has travelled the world with her husband, and now has 2 kids and is settled in her home state. She also has pursued a career in guidance counseling at a local college. Jessica has now experienced the generativity vs. stagnation stage of Erikson's psychosocial theory and is feelig very accomplished and complete.
  • Ego Integrity vs. Despair

    At the age of 76, Jessica can look back on her life with few regrets and a strong sense of satisfaction. She feels she has lived a happy life wiith her husband of 50 years and she has raised strong, independent children who she is sure will change the world someday. She also feels she hs made a difference in many of her own student's lives as well. Jessica has now experienced the ego integrity vs. despair stage in Erikson's psychosocial theory.
