Seven Steps to a Limited Monarchy

  • Charles I and the Petition of Right

    Charles I and the Petition of Right
    When Charles I became king of England, he started taxing all of the people lots of money. When Parliament found out what he was doing, they reminded him of the Petition of Rights an he was not longer able to tax people without Parliaments consent.
  • The Long Parliament

    The Long Parliament
    Parliament go rid of any courts that followed the kings laws and they abolished any taxes that were passed without their consent. Parliament was divided because of their religious beliefs, this created tension in Parliament.
  • The English Civil War

    Charles I created an army and so did Parliament. They fought in a Civil War that took four years to finish.
  • Cromwell and the Puritan Rebuplic

    Cromwell and the Puritan Rebuplic
    Charles I was executed. Parliament got rid of the monarchy, the House of Lords, and the Anglican church. England then became a Puritan republic with Cromwell a its leader. The House of Commons got rid of Cromwell's army and in return Cromwell split apart Parliament. After Cromwell's death, the Anglican church and the monarchy were restored.

    The English government had returned to what it was originally, with a monarchy, parliament and the Anglican church. Charles II wanted to let each religion worship freely but Parliament passed the Clarendon Code, that excluded most of the religions in England.
  • The Test Act was passed

    The Test Act was passed
    The Test Act was passedby Parliament after Charles II issued the Declaration of Indulgences. The act was passed bcause of Charles II's brother. The act stated that civil and military officials had to take an oath against the doctrine of transubstantiation.
  • William III and Mary II become the monarchs

    William III and Mary II become the monarchs
    When William and Mary became the new rulers of England. They passed the Bill of Rights and this limited the power of the monarchy and gve more power to the wealthy people in England. This was known as the Glorious Revolution.
