    Sir Francis became the first Englishmen to circumnavigate the world. The goal of his voyage was to intercept gold and jewels from the Spanish ships.
  • Sir Walter Raleigh's first expedition to Roanoke

    Sir Walter Raleigh was told by Queen Elizabeth I that he was to “discover, search, find out, and view such remote heathen and barbarous Lands, Countries, and territories … to have, hold, occupy, and enjoy.” He never went on a voyage but he set them up and funded them.

    Essex's Rebellion was an unsuccessful rebellion led by Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, in 1601 against Elizabeth I of England and the court faction led by Sir Robert Cecil to gain further influence at court.
